George Gribel [#194]

Summary

Born: France, ca. 1798

Father:

Mother:

Died: prob. Ohio, 1850-1860

Marriage

with Eve D. ???

Children

George Grivel/Gribel

Eve Gribel

Seighfried/Cephus Gribel

John Gribel

Remarks

George and Eve Gribel came to America ca. 1830. Supposedly they lived in Philadelphia at first, in Lebanon Co., PA for a while, in Pittsburg, PA for a while, and by 1850 they were in Hancock Co., OH.

Their son George changed his last name to Grivel around the Civil War. Some of their other children changed the name to Gribel. George and Eve possibly came from Alsace-Lorraine and spoke German. It has also been told that one or both came from Holland. There may have been a fifth child, Fred. See the notes for Seighfried/Cephus Gribel for more information. Note from Barb Schultz, 28-jan-2000: In the 1860 census Eve D. Gribel, wife of George Sr., was living with Eve and Joseph Ostheimer, which makes me think George Sr. must have died between the 1850 and 1860 censuses. We have not been able to find a death record or grave for George Sr., so we don't know for sure. In the 1850 census George's occupation was farmer. The younger George was also a farmer, in Iowa. Before his marriage, George Jr. had worked on a canal (I don't know if it was in PA or OH), and he had worked at a lumber camp and/or sawmill.
